Commissioned by Safanad, this original artwork photographic montage, created in pigment ink on cotton rag paper, measures 80 x 120 cm and was designed by artist Richard Allenby-Pratt in Dubai.
The starting point for this special commissioned artwork is a satellite view of a conventional world map. The map is recognisable, which allows the viewer to further explore the powerful and explosive weather systems, natural and man-made, depicted as moving across the oceans and continents. The artwork consists of over forty layers of global digital data, including global use of electric light marking the developed and emerging global markets and dramatic weather data. The artist has created an artwork that seems to be in flux; constantly moving, unsettling and challenging the viewer. Just as today’s volatile, unpredictable and fast changing global economy presents a challenge to the investor, Safanad employs a unique ‘Weather Map’ approach, drawn from recent advances in physics, to deploy capital in turbulent global markets.
About the Artist
Richard Allenby-Pratt’s background as an experienced commercial photographer, shooting editorial features for The Guardian, The New York Times, Der Spiegel & Time Magazine, led to his interest in digital photographic techniques, which he employs to create artworks that explore surreal and conceptual art themes. All post-production work takes place in his private studio in Dubai. In 2009 Richard worked with Dubai Culture, to create an open-air installation, ‘Community 366’ and after group shows in Dubai with Courtyard Gallery, The Empty Quarter and Mojo Gallery, his work was featured in the London Association of Photographers Awards shows in 2011 and 2012. His artwork was also exhibited at the San Diego Art of Photography Show in 2012. During Dubai Art Week in 2013, he exhibited a solo show, ‘Abandoned’ at Al Serkal Avenue, Shelter Gallery. In 2014 he exhibited at the Oceanside Museum of Art, California – Contemporary Landscape and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen – Arab Contemporary Architecture and Identity; Solo Exhibitions at Pro-Art Gallery, Dubai and the Dubai International Finance Centre.
This special commission marks the fifth anniversary of the founding of Safanad and the opening of a new office in the DIFC Gate Building in Dubai.
